9 August - Day 15 - Soto de Luiña to Cadavedo - 20kms
Thunder and lightning through the night but not too much rain.
Breakfast served at 7am. Most pilgrims are up so we eat together. It’s nice. The kitchen is toasty while the wind, light rain and lightening continue outside.
Breakfast we have the choice of toast with jam, oats, corn flakes, biscuits and coffee.
The Albergue is a donativo. That means you pay what you think it is worth and what you can afford. You put your money anonymously into the donation box on the wall.
Chavi tells us a thunderstorm is due in 1 hour. We pack all valuables into our dry bags and put our covers on our packs. The rain holds off but our phones are stored away hence not many pictures taken today.
Everyone walks at different speeds so our group gradually splits apart, wishing each other Buen Camino as we separate.
There are 2 routes on this next section. The traditional route goes along the ridge line of mountains for 20km. No where to stop. The other follows the coast. Lots of up down in and out of valleys with a village every 4 or 5 km. We choose the coast route.
The first village we get to, there is a little girl about 9yo selling fresh lemonade for 50 cents and her own painted postcards €1. We buy both.
All of the villages we pass through are using their old bicycles to hold plants in their gardens - very cute.
It’s another day of ups and downs. Not too
much on road thankfully. The trails are muddy and soft to walk on! We cross half a dozen streams. The water is shallow and crystal clear.
13km in and we are getting hungry. At the edge of Ballota we find a bar. They have 4 types of sandwiches and cake. It’s too early for lunch. In Spain it doesn't start till 2pm! Chicken sandwich for me and jamon for Kim. They hit the spot.
7kms to go and the sky is bright blue with no clouds. We feel the steam seeping out of the ground. It's hot and sweaty the rest of the way.
We arrive at Cadavedo a little after 2pm. Find Casa Ina which Helena booked for us. We've got the room at the top with two skylights and a Juliette balcony for views over the garden. At €40 it’s fantastic!
We check in, scrub ourselves and our clothes clean and head out for food.
Population 1355 and it seems we only have one option for lunch. The bar and restaurant at the camping ground. We find Sophia there and we join her.
Deep fried Chicken pieces, breaded calamari rings and salad washed down with a beer. Not great, but fill the hole. We won’t be back for dinner.
Sophia is 1/2 our age and has a tent so heads off to walk another 10-20km and then find a spot to free camp.
We get some snacks for dinner from the mini mart attached to the campground, then head back to our pension to rest, blog and read.
10pm bed
