5 August - Day 11 - La Isla to Villavicosa 22km

Image
It’s an overcast and misty morning so not keen on an early morning swim. The water is just too chilly. Check out at 8am. Walk back to the main road to return to the Camino route.  Immediately bump into Alfonso. What timing! We exchange stories of our afternoon, evening and where we stayed. 4km on a country trail of rocks, grass and dirt. We arrive into Colunga for breakfast. We like the feel of the town. Not sure what it is but we like it.  Fueled for the morning we hit the road again.  Lots of hills and road walking. Soon we are drenched in sweat. Rain starts at about 11am. It’s not cold so put our cover on our packs and again enjoy the rain on our skin. It’s washes away the morning sweat.  Arrive in the village of Sebrayo at 12pm. Our  albergue is closed and doesn’t open until 3pm. There is nothing else around to idly wait in the rain.  No cafe or bar, nowhere to get food, and no toilet. We push on....

TLDR - Mostly off road on country and coastal track. Great walking. Splash out on a beachfront hotel. Average sleep. Bed like foam with not much give. But great to have a hot morning shower - yay. Breakfast at 9am, we want to be on the road by then. Spanish are late to bed and to rise. The B&B owners were nice enough to put out ours early. Toast, waffles, some type of cake, muesli, coco pops, coffee, bananas and oranges. Good walking food. On the road by 8:30am. It’s overcast but humid. We thought we were already at the top of the hill, wrong! We start with a 1km climb followed by a steep desent to get us back onto the Camino route. The hills have morning fog rolling over the top of them.   Take a picture in San Esteban de Leces a pint size village. Nothing is open and again not even the cathedral. Part time Catholics!  We hit Vega de Ribadesella and it’s a really quaint village and on the coast.  One house has these gorgeous murals. Would love to have stayed her...
