19 August - Day 24 - Santiago de Compostela

Image
No need to get up early. Kim was aiming for a run, but a sleep-in was too compelling. Small breakfast of coffee and homemade yogurt. Goes well with raspberries and blueberries we bought last night. Check out at 10am and as we leave we bump into hosts Samuel and Maria. It’s always lovely to meet our Airbnb hosts. They used to rent the apartment to students but they didn’t look after it. Kicked them out, renovated and converted to the Airbnb with 3 double rooms, shared bathroom and kitchen all within a short walk to the old town and cathedral. They think they will make more money over the tourist season than they would for the year from students. Head to our next Airbnb to drop off our bags. We couldn't get 2 nights in the same place. The walk back to the old town is a little further but we go through one of the city parks and enjoy the sculptures and the view of the cathedral. Our light breakfast has not satiated us. Kim spots the pastel del nat...

18 August - day 23 - A Coruña to Sigüerio to Santiago - 15kms

Last day. Our total distance walked over the Camino will exceed 400kms today. Mixed feelings.  Broken sleep as the girls in the next room came home around 2am and talked and laughed 4:30am. Our alarm goes off at 5:40. At bus station by 6:10. Coffee, bananas and croissants while we wait. The station security guard stops to chat and ask where are we going. Confirms we are at the right platform, the time the bus is due, and that we can buy tickets on the bus. Super nice!  1 hour and 5 mins we arrive at Sigüeria. It’s cold. The coldest it's been this trip. Find a coffee shop to warm ourselves up.  Caffeinated and fed we are ready for our final leg. The first way marker we see leaving town tells us we have 14.252km to the cathedral in Santiago. As we make our way out of town we are met with a stream of pilgrims on the road ahead. Most are day trippers with tiny backpacks.  We soon pass bidding everyone Buen Camino. We walk on mostly on ...

17 August - Day 22 - Vilalba to A Coruña - 0km rest day

Wake up to heavy rain and fog. Snooze a little longer. The weather is not looking great, the walk today is meant to be predominantly on road and next to the national highway. Not inspiring. Kim can’t find accommodation in our next   destination of Baamonde. The municipal albergue can't be booked, so it's likely we will get a bed there when we arrive. It is big with 90 beds. Kim is not so keen on staying there. Next problem, we want to be able to walk into Santiago de Compostela but there is too much distance to cover in our few remaining days. We can't find a bus or train to allow us to close the gap.  It’s 9am and Kim comes up with a new plan. Bus at 9:49am to A Coruña, spend the day there being a tourist and then bus to a village which is walking distance from Santiago tomorrow. It's on a different Camino route... The Ingles way. We're OK with that.  Arrive at the bus station at 9:30am and it’s deserted... literally no a soul. Bus is due in 19 minutes. 9:40am p...
