7 August - Day 13 - Aviles - 0kms sick day

Kim must have had a dodgy prawn on her pizza last night and she is not well. Decide to stay another night but find a nicer place with our own bathroom.  

Daz is still feeling something crawling on him at night. Not convinced the bed bugs have been eradicated from clothes and bag after Kim getting bitten a few nights ago. Takes all his clothes to a laundrette to try kill them in a hot wash and dry. Kim goes for a nap. 
It’s lunch time we go for a short wander as Kim’s stomach is still not great. Find a cafe for a sandwich and then head back to our comfy hotel room to read, blog and nap.  This is just what our bodies needed.
6pm and we are hungry. We head out to try our luck. It’s a beautiful 25 degrees and busy with people out for paseo or the pre dinner drinks. 
Yhe restaurant above was booked out unfortunately. Each table was in a  big wine barrel.

Most restaurants reopen at 8pm so but find a local fast food place "100 montiditos" which has a €2 salad and €1 bocadillas. Salad and chorizo roll are OK, but the rest are below par.
Kim heads back to the hotel and I stay out to wander, before heading back for an early night.

After our longest day yesterday our feet were still sore when we woke up this morning.  Breakfast of toast, jamon, cheese, tomato purée and olive oil. It was huge. Leaving town we hit a hill, it was hard going on a full stomach. We can see Mondoñado in the valley and the wind turbines on the ridge line high above it. The 8km to Mondoñado is mainly on trail lots of gum trees. Really pretty. Could walk on this kind of trail all day!  Coffee and tortilla in the town square with a perfect view of the cathedral. Daz went to see if we could get a stamp. Nope! But he'd did get a photo of the frescos. Stay for a little longer to soak in the ambience and watching the square wake up.  We have 2 options out of Mondoñado to get to Gontán. Both involve a climb, the first is steeper with more elevation then some downhill but is 4km shorter at 11.9km the other more gradual at 15.9km. 22 July Bucket list

It's the night before we fly. Kim just got an SMS from the airline requesting we arrive 4hrs before departure for additional COVID checkin requirements. We only have carry on so hopefully that means more time in the bar airside rather than acting like sardines in a queue. Our destination is Bilbao, Spain. From Sydney we transit in Doha, then on to London. Stay the night before getting the 6am to Bilbao. We are doing the Camino del Norte, a 680km walk from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela. It is a Pilgrimage for Catholics. Apparently Saint James  is buried at the Santiago Cathedral.  We are not religious. We will be on the walk for 25 days, so not planning to walk every kilometer... if we like a village we'll stay a little longer, if there's a boring unscenic section like along a main road we'll get a bus. Why this walk? We first read The Pilgrimage by Paulo Coelho just after we met in 2002. The Camino has been on our bucket list ever since. Prep...limited. The last 4 we...

Late arrival

Departure Day. We fly at 9pm.  Packing complete. Aim was 5kgs each - fail!. Kim 6.5kg, Daz 7kg. We are carrying our packs so every gram counts. Damn toiletries.  Checked our mailbox just before we left home. Our guidebook had arrived 4 weeks after ordering. We had given up hope. Arrived at airport 4.5 hours early. Airport empty. Check in wait 5 mins. No wait at customs. More time at bar airside. Winners. Flight appears to be on schedule, yay!
